APPROACH

We enjoy the choreography that guides the creation of finished buildings; from hand drawn conceptual sketches to bubble diagrams that teem with creative expression and then through the exacting precision of Revit Architecture construction document sets. We regard architecture as an evolutionary process of discovery. We believe the best design solution is the result of rigorous exploration of nuanced options. We know that getting to understand the client is essential, as it enables us to create the right design solution that best reflects their goals, vision, taste and living preferences.

Light is to architecture a vital expansive definer.  In the residential arena, light stands as that critical influencer of experience. We tend to light in our design progression and accommodate it as a guiding principle for our design work.

We favor long-term benefits over short-term gains. We think of architectural form as skin and bones. The bones demarcate space and provide massing. The skin is made up of the materials that communicate its essence. We labor over design with a bias toward true and fine materials, not necessarily the priciest or the most trendy. We think that materials are the currency of authenticity and by extension endurance.

We love details and we consider a project to be more than a total sum of the parts. Whether proportioning windows, doors, divided mullions or transoms, our work is focused on perfecting detail, detail and more detail. We work toward joining all components of a project by a unifying vocabulary and lifting all to a high quality finish.

We do not gravitate toward trends and we think of style as distinct from package. We know that each project is unique. And while we strive to project the EMA touch, we do so by accommodating the specific requirements of each project as it relates to site, context, and client preferences.

Re-use, preservation and intelligent adaptation are in EMA’s genetic makeup. They constitute our professional roots.  We are committed to minimizing waste on a project, re-using old buildings where possible, designing with solar and geothermal energy systems and green roofs whenever possible. Currently, we are working on better coordinating building components to expand our contribution to environmental responsibility.
